Kartik Shukla Purnima — the full moon of the month of Kartik

Significance

Kartik Purnima arrives on the full moon that ends the lunar month of Kartik — a month already considered especially sacred for bathing, fasting and lamp-lighting. This particular full moon lifts the whole month to its peak.

Three stories converge on this night. The oldest and most widely told is the story of Tripurasura: the story goes that the demon-king Tripurasura and his triple fortresses of gold, silver and iron had grown so powerful that neither gods nor sages could subdue them. On this full moon, Shiva destroyed all three in a single arrow. The gods, flooded with relief and joy, celebrated by lighting countless lamps — which is why this night is also called Dev Diwali, the Diwali of the gods. Many say that what is celebrated on earth in October is the gods' own festival here, a month later.

A second story belongs to Vishnu: having taken the form of the fish Matsya to save the sacred scriptures from a great flood, he is said to have completed that mission on this day. Some traditions also honour the birthday of Kartikeya (Murugan), the son of Shiva, on this tithi (lunar day), which gives the month its name.

Beyond the stories, Kartik Purnima marks the formal close of Chaturmas — the four-month period when, by tradition, Vishnu sleeps. He is understood to have woken on Prabodhini Ekadashi eleven days earlier, and this full moon is the last joyful chapter of that awakening season.

How it’s observed

The day begins well before dawn. A sacred bath — in a river, lake, sea, or at home with a small prayer over the water — is the heart of the festival. Varanasi, Pushkar, Prayagraj and the coasts of Tamil Nadu (where it overlaps with the Karthigai Deepam tradition) draw enormous gatherings. In the diaspora, families recreate the spirit with an early bath, a lamp lit before sunrise and a short prayer.

Through the day many fast, visit a temple of Shiva or Vishnu, and offer diyas (small clay lamps). The evening is the emotional centre: lamps are floated on water — rivers, ponds, even a bowl of water at home — as an offering to the gods. The sight of a hundred little flames drifting on the Ganges is the image most associated with this festival.

In South India, particularly Tamil Nadu, Karthigai Deepam falls around the same time (calculated differently, by the nakshatra Krittika rather than the tithi) and shares the same instinct: lamps everywhere, at home, in the street, on temple towers. Families of Tamil heritage often mark both. In Sikh tradition, Guru Nanak Jayanti (Gurpurab) also falls on this full moon, making it a shared evening of lights for many mixed-heritage households.

The timing, explained

Kartik Purnima is reckoned by tithi (lunar day) and paksha (lunar fortnight). It falls on Shukla Purnima — the fifteenth and final day of the bright fortnight — of the month of Kartik.

This almanac uses the Amanta convention, in which lunar months run from new moon to new moon. In the Amanta reckoning the month is called Kartik. Under the Purnimanta convention used in parts of north India, the same day may be labelled as falling in Margashirsha, though the night itself is identical.

The day is selected by udaya — meaning the tithi must be running at local sunrise. If the full moon begins after sunrise, the festival moves to the following calendar day. Because the moon's timing shifts with longitude, diaspora families should check a city-specific panchang (almanac) for the exact date in their location. The full moon usually falls in late November.

Questions people ask

What is the significance of Dev Diwali?

Dev Diwali means "the Diwali of the gods." The story goes that on this full moon Shiva destroyed the triple fortresses of the demon Tripurasura, and the gods celebrated with lamps. Many believe the gods mark their own festival here, a month after ours.

When does Kartik Purnima usually fall?

Usually in November, about a month after Diwali. It is the full moon that closes the lunar month of Kartik. The exact date shifts each year because it follows the lunar calendar.

Is Kartik Purnima the same as Karthigai Deepam?

They are closely related but not always the same day. Kartik Purnima is reckoned by the Purnima tithi; Karthigai Deepam is reckoned by the nakshatra Krittika in the Tamil tradition. They often coincide and share the same spirit of lamps and light.

Does Guru Nanak Jayanti fall on Kartik Purnima?

Yes. Guru Nanak's birthday is celebrated on Kartik Purnima, making this full moon significant for both Hindu and Sikh communities. Many diaspora households with roots in Punjab observe both occasions on the same evening.

What can I do to observe Kartik Purnima if I am not near a river?

A bath at or before dawn with a short prayer is the essential act. In the evening, light a lamp and float it in a bowl of water, or simply place lamps at the threshold and around the home. The spirit of the observance is the lamp itself.
