Concepts
The five limbs of the Panchang, the lunar days, and the building blocks of a chart.
- PanchangThe Panchang is the Hindu almanac — the five "limbs" of time that describe the quality of each day.
- TithiA tithi is a lunar day — the time the moon takes to gain 12° on the sun. There are thirty in a lunar month.
- PakshaA paksha is a lunar fortnight — the waxing (Shukla) or waning (Krishna) half of the month.
- PurnimaPurnima is the full-moon night — the fifteenth tithi of the bright fortnight, when moon and sun sit opposite.
- AmavasyaAmavasya is the new-moon night — when moon and sun share a sign and the sky is moonless.
- EkadashiEkadashi is the eleventh tithi of each fortnight, sacred to Vishnu and widely kept as a fasting day.
- SankrantiA Sankranti is the moment the sun crosses from one sidereal sign into the next — twelve a year.
- NakshatraA nakshatra is one of the 27 lunar mansions — the star-segments the moon moves through, each 13°20′ wide.
- DashaA dasha is a planetary period — the Vimshottari system divides a life into graha-ruled chapters totalling 120 years.
- LagnaThe Lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth — the anchor of the whole chart.
- AyanamsaThe ayanamsa is the gap between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs — about 24°, and why Jyotish signs differ from Western ones.
- Rahu KaalRahu Kaal is a recurring ~90-minute daily window traditionally avoided for starting anything new.

- SuryaSurya, the Sun, signifies the soul, the self, vitality, the father, and authority.
- ChandraChandra, the Moon, signifies the mind, the emotions, the mother, and the inner self.
- MangalMangal, Mars, signifies energy, courage, drive, conflict, and the siblings.
- BudhaBudha, Mercury, signifies intellect, speech, commerce, and communication.
- GuruGuru, Jupiter, is the great benefic — wisdom, growth, teachers, fortune, and dharma.
- ShukraShukra, Venus, signifies love, beauty, art, pleasure, and relationship.
- ShaniShani, Saturn, is the great teacher through limitation — discipline, time, labour, and consequence.
- RahuRahu, the north lunar node, signifies desire, obsession, foreignness, and sudden amplification.
- KetuKetu, the south lunar node, signifies detachment, spirituality, past-life skill, and letting go.

- AshwiniAshwini is the 1st nakshatra (lunar mansion), spanning 0°–13°20′ Aries; its ruling graha is Ketu.
- BharaniBharani is the 2nd nakshatra (lunar mansion), spanning 13°20′–26°40′ Aries; its ruling graha is Shukra (Venus).
- KrittikaKrittika is the 3rd nakshatra (lunar mansion), spanning 26°40′ Aries–10°00′ Taurus; its ruling graha is Surya (the Sun).
- RohiniRohini is the 4th nakshatra (lunar mansion), spanning 10°00′–23°20′ Taurus; its ruling graha is Chandra (the Moon).
- MrigashiraMrigashira is the 5th nakshatra (lunar mansion), spanning 23°20′ Taurus–6°40′ Gemini; its ruling graha is Mangal (Mars).
- ArdraArdra is the 6th nakshatra (lunar mansion), spanning 6°40′–20°00′ Gemini; its ruling graha is Rahu (the north node).
- PunarvasuPunarvasu is the 7th nakshatra (lunar mansion), spanning 20°00′ Gemini–3°20′ Cancer; its ruling graha is Guru (Jupiter).
- PushyaPushya is the 8th nakshatra (lunar mansion), spanning 3°20′–16°40′ Cancer; its ruling graha is Shani (Saturn).
