Guru

Also written Jupiter · Brihaspati

Guru is Jupiter — the guru of the gods, and the natural great benefic of the chart. It signifies wisdom, higher learning, faith and dharma (right living), and it expands whatever it touches: knowledge, children, wealth, optimism.

It is the significator of the teacher, the counsellor, the priest — and, for a woman’s chart in classical texts, of the husband. A strong Jupiter is read as grace, generosity and good judgement; even afflicted, it tends to protect.

The slow-moving Jupiter takes about a year per sign, and rules the nakshatras Punarvasu, Vishakha and Purva Bhadrapada. Its day is Thursday, and Guru Purnima honours the teacher it represents.
